Wishing, Again!
As we wish each other a happy new year, I cannot but reflect on our eternal hope for a fresh start. A start that could set things on track for a better tomorrow, a start that could make dreams a reality… a start that could undo the damage that we tend to inflict on our own selves.
Interestingly for Indians, our ‘desire’ for a fresh start is probably far stronger than anyone else in the world… probably explaining why we wish each other a ‘happy new year’ at least thrice a year – the start of the Victorian calendar, Diwali and the regional festivals like Bohag Bihu and Baisakhi.
What makes us so full of hope?
Or maybe it is just compulsion. Destitution? In a state of affairs that is mere ‘Ram bharose’ we Indians hope, wish, and do everything else in between. Except, maybe, find solutions. Or… implement it.
Irrespective of whatever the reasons, the question remains – do these wishes actually come true. Thus happiness, success and whatever has been wished for indeed find its way to our lives. At least on such occasions.
Some may argue that happens. 'Human will' can still find strength enough to triumph. Some others would debate - if the will was so strong, ‘new year resolutions’ would have been redundant, maybe even achieved without really being listed.
And yet we all hope. Collectively. Wishing that success, in THIS NEW YEAR, actually transforms into reality. And maybe that’s beautiful… beautiful enough to even beat the cynical mind into believing that wishes could come true in. Just might.
And all our might, we wish. I wish… that things finally come around. For you. For me. For us. Happy New Year!
