Movie Review: Kahaani 2 – Brilliantly Engaging!

When Kahaani had released in 2012, Bollywood was thirsting for a good suspense thriller. The film not only proved successful critically but commercially too. And as the producers release a sequel with the intention of creating it into a franchise the first question that comes up, hence, is whether the new film has as good a mystery element around it. And that is also the first thing that you probably need to forget when head to watch Kahaani 2.
Kahaani 2 does not quite hold the suspense the way its predecessor did. This is an out and out thriller, a very good one. But not quite a suspenseful story that Kahaani was. Once we are ready to accept the film as an independent movie and not necessarily a part of a franchise, or a specific genre, the film does not let you down. There is not a moment during the film that your attention wavers. Sujoy Ghosh’s latest film manages what few films are capable of.
With Kahaani 2, Sujoy moves into a darker zone. He gets into the territory of sexual molestation and abuse. And then weaves a story around it. The story is set in a couple of picturesque small towns in West Bengal, which makes the story more believable. The director also chooses to go for a darker look, to add to the tone of the film. Except when the story is set in Kalimpong, which has a lot of day shots involving a young child.
As the writer, Sujoy does not waste time in getting the viewer to the core plot. In fact, he throws the viewer right into the middle of things. He writes his characters carefully, giving them backstories that completely make sense.
His biggest asset, of course, is Vidya Balan, who comes up with a spectacular show. She brings in a certain relatability to her character. And she also brings in the restlessness and desperation. Arjun Rampal brings in the much needed calm, apart from also being the man who leaves the clues for the viewer. Jugal Hansraj is cast perfectly to establish how looks can be deceptive. Casting indeed is another department where the director nails it bang on. The young girl Naisha Khanna can break your heart with her sorrowful eyes!
Kahaani is supremely engaging. Some of us might catch the clues and then guess the end. Yet the mere thrill of how things work out keep you glued to the screen. I for one did not look at my phone screen for once during the film, and that speaks a lot in this age of social media and constant WhatsApp messages! Two thumbs up!
