It's Italy!
Zidane disappoints, shown Red Card

Italy became the world champions, breaking the penalty jinx in the process, after the intense battle went into the pernalty shoot outs.

The most disturbing moment of the match was when Zidane, who was playing his farewell match, was shown the red card after head-butting Italian striker Materazzi. It was quite a surprise to see a usually cool headed player charging at someone. This was towards the closing moments of the match.

Earlier Italy had equalised through a superb header from Materazzi after Zidane had scored in the 7th minute through a penalty.

Italy looked superior of both the teams with 55 per cent ball possession and an excellent defence. They were also effective in marking Zidane through out making it difficult for the French striker to approach the box.

Italy had clearly been the dark horses of the tournament reaching finals after beating Germany in the semis. Italy had reached the finals in 1994 but were beaten by Brazil in penalty shoot out after Roberto Baggio failed to convert a kick.

Zidane's red card is unlikely to effect his career unless he decides to play again on contrary to his anouncement. But the question remains why did he turn aggressive. There was not much evidence to show any justice for his action. It is rather sad that a player of his stature ends his illustrious career on such a note.
