A runaway comedy

I went to see this movie as it had Govinda in it. I wanted to see if he stil had it in him. Well, to be honest, he is no more what he was. Nevertheless, he is still awesome...and he proves it. And teh best part: he has lost much weight. Guess running around in his constituency did help after all!

getting back to the movie, it is a story which I havent come across in any other movie. Not that I have watched all the movies ever made. But there is certainly nothing like this Bollywood. A theatre company travelling to London loses its lead actress and the manger com director cum everything else Paresh Rawal promises that whoever gets another heroine to act will get to be the hero. Obviously the race for a heroine starts with Govinda and Akshay trying to outsmart eash other. The story takes an interestin turn when the comedy turns into murder mystery engulfing Govinda, Akshay and Paresh Rawal. It is a race henceforth to prove themselves not guilty.

Like any other Priyadarshan movie, the comedy is woven in a great manner and carried out well. Its fun alright. And the murder brings story into the film. good. But not enough.
The music, i didnt bother to check the director's name, is not good. In fact, its irritating at times. too much of noise. however, the other aspects of the film are quite ok.
The acting department is kind of non-existent. I mean, not much scope for performance. But whatever scope it provides, Paresh Rawal stands out and yes Rajpal Yadav is worth mentioning too. Jackie does justice to his role. Akshay is fine. About Govinda, I started with him so no more mentions.
Overall this movie is a one time watch. dont bother to buy the DVD. Priyadarshan will never be able to climb the hights he reached with Hera Pheri again. But yes, i said one-time watch... so do watch it! you dont want to miss on three hours of laughter.

The following is a piece I had written almost two years ago...which stayed in my computer for thislong without anyone reading it. But i believe the opinion this still holds true and hence decided to post it here...

The Northeasterners’ Plight

The recent gang rape of a girl from the northeast state of Meghalaya in the Delhi, the ‘mainland’ and the capital of the country have once again showcased the national attitude towards the northeast. The general attitude of the Indians towards the northeasterners is not something the people in general should not be proud of.
Being a Assamese student studying in IT capital Bangalore, I have often come across strange notions that the people has acquired of the ill-connected region – as to the geographical location of Assam; it’s a foreign country; the people, if the are living in forests etc. We do agree that Assam and for that matter the whole of the northeast is economically backward but the question of being culturally backward is highly debatable-the region has its own unique culture and lots can be learnt from it (just for an example, the status of woman, and the non existence of the dowry system). And no we are not cannibals although there are tribes, quite a few for that matter, who do eat animals generally not eaten in the ‘mainland’. So do people of many other countries. But they are not considered uncivilized, then why the northeasterners? One more query the people often come to us with is that if we, are from foreign countries, most of us being what is termed as ‘Chinky’ or in general terms with mongoloid features. A serious lack of information we can say!
Not that the northeasterners are faultless, in fact they are to be blamed for the situation too.
The most important aspect that has contributed to the downfall of the once prosperous region is the misunderstanding and the intolerance of a tribe towards another. Countless tribes, and countless militant outfits fighting each other and the governments have added only to the fall of the region from its previous grace rather than the contrary. We would have done better by fighting together against common disadvantages. The Bangladeshi menace, natural calamities, industrial backwardness, poor connectivity are problems that need to be taken care of without any more wastage of time for the betterment of this astonishingly beautiful region, and probably the least explored and understood region in the country.
The people need to carry their agenda to the capital. And who can do this better than the students? There are student associations of different tribes in outer states, which performs tasks of providing the students with information regarding colleges and protection of students of their community. But what we need is association which can take be called as one for the whole of northeast, which promotes tolerance among different tribes, and also awareness of our cultures among the Indians. We also need honest politicians who can represent the region and bring about a development by bringing to the notice of the central government, the problems of the region and force them to improve those.
One more thing that needs to be brought into notice is that when we studied history, we studied about kingdoms and dynasties that ruled India, and the freedom struggle where in we study about freedom fighters of the whole country. But when students of outer states study history, they hardly study anything about Assam or the northeast. This, despite the fact, that the northeast has its own history. Few people knows that when all the kingdoms of India had given in to the Mughals, the Ahom dynasty of Assam was the only one who humiliated them, not once but seventeen times. Few knows the name of the hero of those battles, Lachit Borphukan, who in spite of being severely ill led the Assamese to victory. Few knows that this great personality had slain his own uncle when he had found sleeping on guard uttering dexotkoi mumai dangor nohoi meaning my uncle is not bigger than my country. But everyone knows about Sher Shah Suri. Few knows about konoklota the fourteen year old minor who gave up her life fighting against the British, or Kushal Kuwar, the brave Gandhian and the only martyr of the Quit India Movement who was hanged by the British but everyone knows about Bhagat Singh. What could be the reason behind this? If we are an integral part of the country, why are Indians not educated about us?
The tourism needs to be spruced up. The region has almost all the natures beauty, dazzling rivers, snow clad mountain peaks, enchanting forests wherein lives a splendid variety of flora and fauna, amongst which are quite a few endangered species. Not to speak of the cultural heritage. A paradise.
Rahul Gandhi’s visit to the region recently was highly appreciated. there ought to be more such visits from the top brass of the administration which will help them to understand the region and its problems better, rather then just commenting on the law and order from a distant place. More understanding will help everyone to avert any further situation like the manipur incident last year.
The people of the northeast are very simply and do believe in peaceful existence.
There has been examples of high achievements by the people of the region in every sphere of life may it be music, sports, bravery or literature and there are several in the offing who can bring repute to the region and the nation given the proper opportunity.
The region needs to be portrayed in proper light.

DON't miss it

Farhan Akhtar, Shah Rukh Khan and a old blockbuster film... Don is being considered a remake...and well may be it is. But what I would like to state in the very beginning is that it's not the same film...the script in fact differs from the original at vital places. The Story of course is about Don. But there are quite a few twist and turns to keep it fresh. The film is made for the present generation. The diary is repalced by a cool CD and long coat replaced by short jacket.
One thing that makes this film a pleasure is the cinematography. The camera work is exceptionally good... and so is the graphics, SFX and credits. The films on the whole looks really sleek.
Coming to the point which everyone else has been discussing: Shah Rukh Vs AB
Well SRK has a very stylish way on interpreting a chracter. But the film does miss BigB. May be because his baritone did wonders too the character! BigB has a style which is unmatched. Having said that, SRK needs to be given credit for bringing an energy to the film. He radiates energy.
The performances of all the other actors are pretty good. Ofcourse Boman Irani as Vardhan is awsome.

Well..Going Goa

Well, it was a small decision we had made some years back. The three of us. We were just into college and high on spirits. We wanted to finish studies and get to work. Working, somehow has always seemed to me more interesting than studying. Well i dont need to alk about studies do i?
Hemanta had got into Civil Engineering in AEC and Raja had converted his goal to study in an IIT. I has scraped through the pre university and landed up in Bangalore to pursue something which had suddenly taken up my fantasy. I must admit I hadnt the faintest idea what I was stepping into. Whims change lives!
Well, it was Raja as usualy who had come up with the idea. I was the one who would always say ‘yes’ to any shit thing. So it was upto Hemanta. This guy has been an anchor in our friendship. Raja and I had always been wild coming up with strangest of ideas..well ok Raja did it more than me. But Hemnata played his role unfailingly efficiently. I have always admired that guy’s consistency. In any field for that matter. In school that guy was absent for just one day from class I to class X. Crazy! He could have been the ideal Dettol kid. Too bad Bollywood ain’t in Guwahati. Plus he wasnt half as handsome he is now. (well Hemanta if you are reading this, i hope you understand this line has double connotation. Don’t take any decisions like withdrawing the treat for your job. I am hungry and can’t wait to reach guwahati to eat your treat!
Getting back to the point, Raja had come up with an idea: Hey lets study hard. Get our jobs fast. and then when we get our forst salary’s or at least when we get the first break, we will heead to Goa for a holiday. The three of us. For me the three of us together is the best time I have. Well, you got to understand what it means.
I agreed. Like I always do. Kya karoo mujhe haan kehna hi he ata. And surprise of surprises Hemnta said yes too. Well the BIG STORY: HEMANTA DOES NOT EVEN AGREES TO GO FOR A MOVIE!
It was during my vacations… i had gone home. I returned soon but this particular thought remained.
Years later this morning Raja gave me a call to tell me that he had god a job. The thrill was only to be felt. Hemanta had been working since six months now. I had joined a week back and now buddy Raja tells me he’s got a job too. The first things i tell him is…well of course after conratulting him, “so we will go to Goa this year.”
Well, best part, this friend of mine will be earning enough so i plan to twist and turn certain thoughts to milk money outta him…hahah..afterall what are friends for!
all said … and yet to be done… it certainly seems that a dream could be very near to be realised. I helps to have great freinds with you. That way you never need to plan your life. Being whimsical suddenly feels like that the best trait.

NO to ULFA

95 per cent people said ‘NO’ to ULFA claim of sovereignty of Assam in a recent survey.

The survey conducted in 9 districts of the state was undertaken APW - by an organization run by kins of ULFA militants. The districts included in the survey are Bongaigaon, Sonitpur, Nalbari, Goalpara, Guwahati (metro), Dhubri, Darrang, Lakhimpur, Dhemaji and Nalbari. The survey will be extended to other districts of the state soon.

ULFA chairman Arabindo Rajkhowa has however rejected the survey and described the APW as a body "comprising agents of RAW and IB (that) functioned at the behest of the Indian machinery".

ULFA's insistence on making sovereignty the core issue for any talks with the government is one of the reasons that have stalled the peace process in Assam. The Centre has already rejected the demand.

Interestingly, the banned outfit stepped up its activities around the same time the result of the survey was declared. 17 people were killed in a series of attacks across the state. It is alleged the ULFA is behind the attacks.

Ramdev’s cure for cancer

Controversy is the food for Ramday, and he continues to strive on it when he claimed Yoga can cure cancer. Ramdev on Monday claimed that regular practice of seven breathing exercises or 'pranayams' had successfully cured cancer within six to nine months. “Cancer of the breast, liver, prostate, uterus, pituitary gland, brain tumours and even leukaemia, can be cured by practising the seven breathing exercises," he claimed. He said his claims were based on documentation and hundreds of patients have benefited, He also prescribed some medicines "Some other ingredients like wheat grass juice and those derived from neem and tulsi leaves are also administered to patients alongside the breathing exercises." Said Ramdev. Lending his belif to allopathy he said it and was needed in emergencies, but they should come only after Yoga, which has proven benefits. "Otherwise, the health department should be renamed as allopathy department and the health minister as allopathy minister," said Ramdev in humour. Denying his intentions of creating controversy he said,"I have no intention to get into any controversy. I am doing my job.” And also that it didn’t bother what people thought of him. Also in a press conference the yoga guru said he would have nothing to do with politics.
